An atrial septal defect (ASD) is a hole in the wall (septum) between the two upper chambers of your heart (atria). The condition is present at birth (congenital). Small defects might be found by chance and never cause a problem. Some small atrial septal defects close during infancy or early childhood.
25 Apr 2017 An isolated atrial septal defect (ASD) is the second most common congenital heart disease. Secundum defects are the most common subtypes of
When you suspect a patient has an ASD based on the findings of an incomplete Right Bundle Branch Block with a rSr' or rSR' the next thing you should do is examine the frontal plane QRS. The 12-lead ECG will show an incomplete right bundle branch block and left axis deviation (in contrast to the secundum ASD which has a right axis deviation). The ECG sensitivity for diagnosing an ASD was 36.1%, specificity was 80%, positive predictive value was 14.7%, and negative predictive value was 92.9% with an overall accuracy of 76.2%. Patients with ASD and RSR'-V1 were significantly older than patients with ASD and no RSR'-V1 pattern. The commonest form of this defect (so called Secundum ASD) is a defect in the central part of the "Atrial Septum" (the partition separating the Atriums). This allows red blood to pass through into the right side of the heart, leading to enlargement of the right ventricle and excessive flow in the lung circulation. Subsequently the patient underwent closure with patch of the ASD without complications.

ASD being a post tricuspid shunt, development of pulmonary hypertension and Eisenmenger syndrome is delayed and survival to adult age group is common. RSR'-V1 is a poor screening test for the detection of ASD. It should not change the clinical suspicion or the decision to obtain an echocardiogram. Older children without RSR'-V1 on ECG are unlikely to have an ASD. RSR'-V1 is a poor screening test for the detection of ASD. There are 3 major types of ASDs or interatrial communications: ostium secundum, ostium primum, and sinus venosus ( Figure 1 A) defects. The ostium secundum is a true defect of the atrial septum and involves the region of the fossa ovalis.
1976-01-02 · Mitral valve prolapse in children with secundum--type atrial septal defect (ASD II). Keck EW, Henschel WG, Gruhl L. A left ventricular angiocardiogram for evaluation of the mitral valve in patients with uncomplicated secundum type atrial septal defect has been proposed in a recent paper by Victoria et al. (1974).
ASD being a post tricuspid shunt, development of pulmonary hypertension and Eisenmenger syndrome is delayed and survival to adult age group is common. The septum secundum grows caudally and covers the ostium secundum. However, the septum secundum does not completely divide the atria, but leaves an oval orifice (the foramen ovale) that is covered but not sealed on the left side by the flexible flap of the septum primum ( figure 1 ).

Signs of right ventricular hypertrophy are generally observed in adult patients with ASD. Right bundle branch block (complete or incomplete) is the most frequent ECG sign of ASD. Dr. Mahmut Gokdemir has donated this ECG to our website. ASD overview and secundum ASD Atrial septal defect (ASD) is the commonest congenital heart disease in the adult, barring of course bicuspid aortic valve. ECG in ASD with severe pulmonary hypertension. ECG in ASD with severe pulmonary hypertension: Tall R’ in V1, ST depression in inferior leads and V2-V5, and T inversion in inferior leads and V1-V6 are seen. Chest X-ray in atrial septal defect. The classical finding of chest X-ray (CXR) in atrial septal defect is pulmonary plethora, due to increased vascularity. This is seen when there is a large left to right shunt.
